e island of Espanola where he was living at the time. He heard that a ship was in port that was leaving soon. So he hid in a barrel that was supposed to contain salted fish and was rolled aboard. When the captain found him he was very angry. He thretened to kill him. But he begged so hard that the captain had mercy on him later when they returned to the island. Balboa ran into the woods and travelled west as far as he could go. He was determined to do something useful in his life. But then he stopped. He had discovered the Pacific Ocean!

He never did pay his debts and was later beheaded as a criminal.
